... scribbled in the margin between pages ...
The calm glass finish of a swift moving stream may camoflage a raging undertow below. It is the same with the depths of human emotions. Although it is preferable to be close to others in theory ... to family ... to friends ... to the world in general, the risk of getting hurt can prevent us from exposing our vulnerabilities. We may want to press against even our own resistances and the flux makes it harder to share the tenderness that accompanies our insecurities ... the depths of the current.
Despite my naturally outgoing nature, I gave myself permission to withdraw ... to be reserved ... quiet without glimpse of the forces that were at work within me. There simply wasn't ... exposure for any and all to see .. to judge or misjudge beneath their own social expectations.
It would be only for a short time then those closest would have privilege of seeing beneath the glass surface.
So I, made lame by fortune's dearest spite,
Take all my comfort of thy worth and truth;
For whether beauty, birth, or wealth, or wit,
Or any of these all, or all, or more,
Entitled in thy parts do crowned sit,
I make my love engrafted to this store:
So then I am not lame, poor, nor despis'd,
Whilst that this shadow
doth such substance give
That I in thy abundance am suffic'd
And by a part of all thy glory live.
Look what is best,
that best I wish in thee:
This wish I have;
then ten times happy me!
